This vehicle became one of the symbols of Eastern Germany and by far the best-seller in that market. More luxurious is the Wartburg, but due to its price it remained the privilege of the nomenklatura. The two-stroke engine reveals its motorcycle origins, the steel frame is not exactly an example of longevity, but the plastic bodywork – the famous Duroplast with vegetal fibers which many would later call “pressed cardboard” – is eternal. The company AWZ in Zwickau produced more than 150,000 of these vehicles a year, including the cabriolet and giardinetta versions. With the fall of the Berlin wall, it became a legend.
