The first modern car with an internal combustion engine was a Panhard, built thanks to René Panhard and Emile Levassor, true pioneers of French and global car industry. The company, founded in 1867 as a machine tool producer, started the production of its first cars in 1889.

After the Second World War it launched a runabout destined for a long-lasting success, the Dyna, with front wheel drive and an air-cooled engine. It became part of Citroën in 1965, and in 1967, one century after its foundation, it ceased its civilian production.
