Established at Rüsselsheim in 1862 to manufacture bicycles and sewing machines, the Adam Opel company began to make cars under licence from the French firm Darracq in 1900. The first true Opel appeared in 1902 and fathered a long dynasty of models. Opel has been the German arm of General Motors since 1929. The 5/12 with its spider coachwork was widely sold and also appeared as a sports version.
