With this Land Rover 109 christened Aziza 3, the photographer, architect, explorer and writer Nino Cirami performed a legendary feat in 1968: a journey from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego – the longest overland route possible on the planet. It took 1500 hours of work to equip the car for the journey from the extreme north to the extreme south – from the Arctic to the Antarctic, crossing every climate from the polar to the equatorial – but the result was a perfect machine. After setting off on July 2 1968 from Genoa to New York on the ocean liner Michelangelo, together with Aziza and his travel companion Rino Pascotto, he drove for 11 months (326 days), through 18 countries for a total of 102,000 Km: the longest uninterrupted rally raid in history. Aziza 3 came through this trial with flying colours and was still in perfect working order at the end of the journey, without even needing its leaf springs or clutch to be replaced.
