The F50, very much the heir to the F40’s crown in that it was launched to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary while the F40 celebrated the 40th anniversary, is basically, in terms of its performance and construction, an F1 car adapted for road use. Everything on this breathtaking car, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1995, was derived from Ferrari’s grand prix experience. A veritable technological masterpiece, this car uses a carbon fibre chassis tub with the engine performing a load-bearing structural function. Just like in an F1 racer, the entire rear of the car, including the suspension, brakes and wheels, is carried by the engine, which is in turn fixed to the centre tub behind the driver. The engine of the F50 is the same as the unit powering the 1990 F1 race car, increased from 3500 to 4698 cc. The F50’s performance was stunning: a maximum speed of 325 km/h, 0 to 100 acceleration in 3.87 seconds and from 0 to 1000 m in 21.7 seconds. It was also a limited edition car: just 349 would ever be built and snapped up immediately.
