LEM Laboratorio Elettrico Mobile

1974

Presented at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show at Giovanni Michelotti’s booth, this original two-seater electric city car, with a name reminiscent of the lunar module but actually an acronym for “Laboratorio Elettrico Mobile”. Its most original feature is its load-bearing structure, made of riveted duralumin sheet metal (according to the technique used at the time for the most advanced single-seater racing cars) so as to obtain a total weight, without batteries, of just 350 kg: an exceptionally modest weight for a car with independent suspension, a hydraulic braking system (with regenerative braking, i.e., recovery of kinetic energy during braking), a complex electrical and electronic system, and a comfortable, well-finished body.
