Small, light, yet agile and powerful , the D46 , designed by Dante Giacosa and Giovanni Savonuzzi for Piero Dusio , founder of Cisitalia , is the first entirely new Italian racing car to try its hand in the races . The idea , revolutionary , is to launch a series production of racing cars to be given to famous drivers . Debut occurs in Turin , Brezzi Cup 1946 , on the Valentino circuit ( first race on a closed circuit in Italy after World War II ) . At the starting grid 7 small Cisitalia , led by Dusio , Nuvolari , Sommer , Chiron , Taruffi , Cortese and Biondetti , against 26 other cars : it is a triumph , with three Cisitalia at the first positions overall. The successes of the D46 (it won for example the 1948 Italian F2 Championship with Felice Bonetto at the wheel) open the way for the design of the unforgettable 202 , in 1947.
