Its mechanics are a challenge to automotive technique, with Vittorio Jano showing all his mastery and leadership. This vehicle constituted the debut in Formula 1 for Lancia, which had lost Vincenzo Lancia, but had gained the trust of two champions like Ascari and Villoresi. The design and creation process for this car was very fast; but not the same can be said for its development, which turned out to be complex, time-consuming and expensive. The “last straw” is Ascari’s tragedy, which led Lancia to yield the whole racing department to its former rival, Ferrari. In Maranello they were quick to seize this chance, and the following year the D50 won the World Championship, also thanks to Fangio’s talent. The vehicle displayed here, however, was donated by Lancia in 1959, together with four more cars.
