On the occasion of the first stage finish in Turin of the 42nd edition of the Mille Miglia, MAUTO celebrates the world’s most beautiful race with the exhibition A MILLE MIGLIA LONG JOURNEY

The Exhibition-created in collaboration with the Museo Mille Miglia in Brescia and open to visitors in MAUTO’s project room from June 12 to Sept. 29-tells the story of the legendary race, an epopee that lasted for three decades-from 1927 to 1957-and for which the most famous champions of the period competed on a “1000 Miglia” course. The exhibition recounts the three decades of the race, with a special focus on the most significant years.

1927, the date of the first edition; the revival after the war in 1947; and 1957, the year of Taruffi’s triumph and tragic epilogue. Each of these year corresponds to a fundamental stage in the history of the Mille Miglia: Brescia, the place where it all began; Turin, the symbol of the postwar recovery; Rome, the stage that unites Italy from North to South and the city of Taruffi’s bitter victory.

1000 Miglia by Mailander

A selection of photographic portraits taken by Rodolfo Mailander, photojournalist and later head of international relations for FIAT. Drivers, team managers, engineers, journalists, technicians: Enzo Ferrari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Alberto Ascari, driver Gilberte Thirion are just some of the faces immortalized in the many moments of the race, both during the competition and behind the scenes.

The Exhibition is part of a project carried out by four of Italy’s leading auto museum hubs – Museo Mille Miglia in Brescia, Museo Nicolis in Villafranca di Verona, Museo Fratelli Cozzi in Legnano and Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile – with the Fondazione Gino Macaluso per l’Auto Storica. First result of this unprecedented partnership, the exhibition will offer in each museum a selection of images that Rodolfo “Rudy” Mailander took with his Leica at the “most beautiful race in the world”. High-quality shots, exceptionally granted by the prestigious Revs Institute in Florida, to bring to life a historical and cultural cross-section in which the 1000 Miglia is both protagonist and context.

On the occasion of the departure of the Mille Miglia from Turin and on the opening day of the exhibition – Wednesday, June 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. – MAUTO presents the second edition of the Mille Miglia of Ideas titled Passages and Landscapes. How the Most Beautiful Race in the World Unveils and Reveals the History and Geography of Italy: the review of interventions and stories curated by Gianluigi Ricuperati, who in 2023 had inaugurated the Museum’s 90th anniversary celebrations, bringing in exponents of contemporary humanism to talk about the culture of the Automobile. Prominent names from the Italian cultural scene will take turns in the MAUTO Piazza to explore the different ways in which Italy’s most important race has been intertwined with the country’s historical events, with the landscape and the issues, fundamental today, of sustainable mobility. Francesco Filippi, one of the revelation historians of recent years-translated throughout Europe with his books on Mussolini-will tell what our Country was like when the Mille Miglia debuted, at the height of the fascist era. Italy’s greatest poet, Valerio Magrelli, on the other hand, will alternate readings of his own texts and those of Vittorio Sereni, who dedicated a lyric contained in his masterpiece ‘Diario d’Algeri,’ a milestone of postwar poetry, to the Mille Miglia, exploring a different Italy emerging from the tragedy of world war. Touring Club Italiano’s editorial director Ottavio di Brizzi, taking a cue from the race’s suspension in 1957 due to an accident, will help us explore the theme of the landscape narrative of the ‘treasure peninsula,’ between tourism, sports and culture. Elisa Gallo, disseminator of ‘active mobility,’ will lead a journey into the future-present of the urban landscape, bringing the instances of ’30 km/h’ into a different context from the one in which we usually debate bicycle and city. Photographer Gigi Cifali will close, showing images of a period that the Mille Miglia – suspended until the 1990s – did not witness, namely the 1970s, in which the link between cars and landscape took on the connotations of social clash and the nightmare of terrorism, culminating in the symbolic ‘Renault 4’ in which President Aldo Moro’s corpse was found.

Public Program

Talks, screenings and opportunities for discussion as a corollary to the temporary exhibitions.

The Public Program completes the MAUTO cultural schedule and broadens the discussion on the subject of cars and mobility. A program that explores different languages and transversal approaches, opening up to a contemporary and transmedia discussion.

STORIES, VISIONS, SOUNDS. A  calendar of meetings that alternates between conversations, editorial presentations, projections, musical and performance events: stories that embrace art, design, literature and current affairs; visual explorations ranging from auteur films to artist videos and documentaries; sound proposals that move between musical genres, with authors and performers, ensembles and soloists.

Some of the scheduled meetings – all free and upon reservation – develop from the themes addressed by the temporary exhibitions and research activities of the Museum’s Conservation and Restoration Centre and Documentation Centre.
