The most promising rookie in Piston Cup history is ready to make his debut at MAUTO.
On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the founding of FIAT, MAUTO – Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile presents the exhibition 125 TIMES FIAT. Modernity through FIAT imagery that traces the long and fascinating history, unique in the twentieth-century industrial context, of the Turin car factory, offering a reinterpretation that highlights its social impact and artistic production. The exhibition project, curated by Giuliano Sergio and carried out in collaboration with Centro Storico FIAT and Heritage HUB, can be visited from 15 November 2024 to 4 May 2025 in the ground floor spaces of the Museum.
Founded in 1899, Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino was able to seize the opportunities of the industrial revolution and Italian national unity to establish itself as the main private interpreter of the country’s modernization in the last century. Drawing on the vast visual heritage produced or inspired by FIAT, the exhibition 125-TIMES FIAT. Modernity through FIAT imagery traces the link that has united the Turin car company to the cultural, industrial and economic development of Italy. A story – scattered with insights into art, cinema, communication, design, architecture, advertising, music and literature – which, through the evocative power of objects and images, tells over a century of history and experimentation, not only in the automotive field, offering an in-depth look at the unique business model of a company that has represented the Italian path to modernity, exploring languages, production sectors and geographical areas.
The exhibition is completed by a series of five meetings and debates held in collaboration with Università di Torino. Each event represents a reflection on the themes addressed by the exhibition, underlining its multidisciplinary approach: the authors of the essays included in the catalogue will discuss with professors from Università di Torino, moderated by the curator Giuliano Sergio.
The programme of talks includes special guided tours with the curator, editorial presentations and meetings that will help to enrich the story of the exhibition with different points of view and experiences.

Exhibition pathway
Dalla svolta epocale della Ferrari 246 e della Cooper T51, fino all’affermazione del nuovo corso con Brabham BT20 e Cooper T81-Maserati, passando per l’innovazione radicale di Lotus 72, Lotus 56B e March 701, e per l’apice tecnico rappresentato da Tyrrell 006, McLaren M23 e Shadow DN1; una stagione di sperimentazione senza precedenti che trova espressione nelle visionarie March 761, March 2-4-0 e Brabham BT45, fino all’evoluzione verso nuove filosofie progettuali con Theodore TR1, Arrows A2 e Williams FW07, per arrivare alle soluzioni più estreme e controverse della Lotus 88B e alla potenza dell’era turbo incarnata dalla Brabham BMW BT54. Il percorso chiude idealmente con la modernità della McLaren MP4/5 e con la svolta tecnologica introdotta dalla Ferrari 640, che segna a suo modo la resa di Ferrari che la farà progettare in Inghilterra.
La Ferrari 640 sarà esposta fino all’8 settembre alla mostra Monaco et l’Automobile, de 1893 à nos jours al Grimaldi Forum di Monte Carlo.
In esposizione anche 28 caschi, 4 tute – indossate rispettivamente da Jim Clark nel 1965, da Jackie Stewart e da Vittorio Brambilla nel 1972 e da Riccardo Patrese nel 1978 -, i programmi delle gare – uno per anno dal 1958 al 1988, ognuno dei quali arriva da un Gran Premio differente nei 5 continenti – e il motore Ford Cosworth DFV, definito “una rivoluzione con le candele accese”: progettato nel 1967 da Keith Duckworth e Mike Costin con il sostegno lungimirante della Ford Motor Company, debuttò sulla Lotus 49 voluta da Colin Chapman.
In un racconto che attraversa tre decenni di rivoluzione tecnica e culturale, le vetture – espressione quasi totale dell’ingegno britannico, con le sole eccezioni firmate Ferrari –testimoniano come il Regno Unito sia stato il motore di una trasformazione capace di cambiare per sempre la Formula 1 e influenzare l’intera industria automobilistica mondiale.

The cars on display are presented alongside a wide selection of works of art, archival documents, exceptional graphic, photographic and audiovisual materials that help define the visual imagery of the company: from the advertising posters and sketches of the beginning of the century made, among others, by Leopoldo Metlicovitz and Plinio Codognato – where the transition from the aesthetic culture of liberty to the dazzling power of the new technical and mechanical possibilities that will inspire Futurism took place – to the pictorial works of Mario Sironi, Carlo Carrà and Felice Casorati that offer an extraordinary representation of modernity imagined by Fiat.

Speciali visite guidate e appuntamenti gratuiti – articolati in conversazioni e incontri con piloti, giornalisti e progettisti – per incontrare i grandi protagonisti dell’epoca che raccontano le storie, le emozioni e le sfide che hanno plasmato un’epoca leggendaria. Una rassegna cinematografica realizzata in collaborazione con il Museo Nazionale del Cinema racconta il mondo delle competizioni sportive attraverso cinque film iconici: Linea rossa 7000 (1965) di Howard Hawks, Grand Prix (1966) di John Frankenheimer, Le 24 ore di Le Mans (1971) di Lee H. Katzin, Rush (2013) di Ron Howard e Le Mans ’66 – La grande sfida (2019) di James Mangold.

Una visita guidata nel cuore di una delle stagioni più rivoluzionarie della storia della Formula 1. Un viaggio tra ingegneria e passione – della durata di circa 1 ora – per scoprire non solo le caratteristiche tecniche delle 23 vetture iconiche esposte, ma anche la straordinaria energia che ha guidato progettisti, piloti e team. Attraverso modelli leggendari, documenti, memorabilia e fotografie, si entra in un’epoca in cui l’ingegneria evolve rapidamente, dando vita a soluzioni innovative e spesso radicali, mentre la competizione spinge a superare ogni limite. Al centro, creatività, intuizione e coraggio.
La visita si sviluppa come un racconto immersivo che restituisce anche il clima della Swinging London, tra motorsport, musica, design e nuove visioni. Dalle rivalità in pista alla rivoluzione dei “garagisti” inglesi, il percorso offre una lettura coinvolgente della mostra, per comprendere come passione e ingegno abbiano ridefinito il linguaggio della velocità.

La sfida e la passione delle corse
Una rassegna cinematografica realizzata in collaborazione con il Museo Nazionale del Cinema racconta il mondo delle competizioni sportive attraverso cinque indimenticabili pellicole: Linea rossa 7000 (1965) di Howard Hawks, Grand Prix (1966) di John Frankenheimer, Le 24 ore di Le Mans (1971) di Lee H. Katzin, Rush (2013) di Ron Howard e Le Mans ’66 – La grande sfida (2019) di James Mangold.
Speciale convenzione: i possessori del biglietto di ingresso al cinema per uno dei fil della rassegna avranno diritto al biglietto ridotto del Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile + mostra I nemici del Drake.

Il catalogo
A corredo della mostra è stato realizzato un catalogo, edito da Minerva Edizioni, curato da Carlo Cavicchi e Mario Donnini, con il contributo di Maurizio Cilli. Il libro racconta quella che può essere definita una vera e propria “guerra dei trent’anni” (1958–1988), un periodo in cui la Formula 1 cambia pelle. Ferrari, cresciuto in un mondo di grandi costruttori e vetture potenti, si trova a fronteggiare avversari inattesi: piccoli team inglesi, definiti con ironia “garagisti”, che costruiscono monoposto leggere, agili, spesso assemblate con motori acquistati sul mercato. Una rivoluzione che il Drake inizialmente guarda con diffidenza, ma che finirà per ridefinire per sempre l’equilibrio delle corse nel “Circus”.
